How it works

Know What to Expect When Arranging Care

Start with a conversation about what would make life at home easier. You can ask questions, explore the support you need and agree what your care will include.

Three Steps to Agreeing Your Care

  1. Stage 1
A woman in her late seventies in a saffron cardigan pours tea from her own floral pot in her bright sitting room.

Talk Through the Help You Need

Tell us what has become difficult for you or someone you love. That might be getting ready, preparing meals or keeping up with everyday jobs.

You don't need to have worked everything out before calling. The first conversation helps you understand whether Better at Home could be right for you.

  2. Stage 2
An older man in a green jumper at his table with a family member and a carer, a notebook between them.

    Explore Your Options at Home

Your free home assessment gives you time to explain your routine, what you need help with and what you want to keep doing yourself.

You can ask questions and discuss how support could fit into your everyday life. This helps you decide whether the care available is right for you.

  3. Stage 3
An open care plan and a pen on a kitchen table, a mug beside it, a carer moving through the room behind.

Agree What Your Care Will Include

Your support is agreed with you and written into a care plan. You have a clear record of the help you'll receive, so you know what to expect.

Read it through, ask about anything that is unclear and raise anything that doesn't reflect the support you need.

Understand the Cost Before You Decide

Knowing what care would cost helps you decide whether it will work for you.

Tell us what support you're considering and ask about the cost when you get in touch.

Your home assessment is free, so you can discuss your needs at home without paying for that visit.

Care visits last at least 30 minutes. The time needed for your support is part of the discussion about your care.

Independent information can help you understand your options, including whether you could get help with care costs.

A Council Needs Assessment

You can ask your local council for a free needs assessment to identify what care and support could help you.

This is separate from Better at Home's assessment of the support we could provide.

Questions Before You Get in Touch

Yes. You can contact us about care for a parent, partner, friend or relative. Tell us what help they may need. Their support is agreed with them as part of planning their care.

No. Start with what is becoming difficult or what you'd like help with. You can talk through the options before deciding what support you need.

Every care visit lasts at least 30 minutes. The length of your visits is discussed alongside the tasks you need help with.

Tell us when you're hoping to start. We'll need to understand the support you need and discuss availability before a start date can be agreed.
